Every spring, when summer temperatures warm our brains, thousands of Quebecers wish that their pool water would instantly become clear and residue-free, just by snapping their fingers. Each of us improvises himself as an alchemist and becomes a “tester”. Everyone rushes in and empties the shelves of chemical products in specialized stores, to the great pleasure of the manufacturers of these products.

Back at home, this is where things can get dramatic. Many pool owners prepare shock mixes. This terminology is even written on some of the containers of these products. The vast majority of alchemists of all stripes are unaware that there are several different products generically referred to as “chlorine”. If mixed, two different types of chlorine can explode, detonate, severely burn people and release extremely toxic gases.

NEVER mix these products indoors

  • When you start your pool pump, ALWAYS introduce the products into the water.
  • Salt from your salt system (if you have one) should be dispersed directly into the pool.
  • Other products should always be introduced SLOWLY into the skimmer, making sure the filtration system is on.
  • Always strictly follow the instructions of your chlorinator, brominator or other treatment delivery system provider very carefully.
